PRESS RELEASE
Reconstructing Temporal Memory in the Cleft Between Artificial and Natural
Taking Foucault's 'heterotopia' as its conceptual anchor—a space that exists in juxtaposition with reality yet remains fundamentally other, simultaneously material and imaginary—the exhibition presents Yuan Fangzhou's glass-based practice. Through foaming and kiln-firing techniques, the artist transforms this quintessentially artificial medium into fragmented semblances of stone and concrete: forms that appear as relics from a collapse that never was. The geometric remnants articulate the rigorous logic of human fabrication, while their weathered surfaces mimic nature's ambiguous erosion, generating a dynamic tension within the interstitial space between the artificial and the organic.

Within controlled parameters, he orchestrates the natural growth of glass, allowing chance and craftsmanship to coalesce into 'intermediates.' Shedding its label as the artificial, glass leverages its translucency, reflectivity, and fractility to destabilize material boundaries, hovering between the real and the imagined. These works stand as relics tempered by time—forgotten vestiges of a speculative future, or fragments of an incomplete ruin.
BLANKgallery invites you to traverse this glass-built "heterotopia", to engage with the paradoxes of material form and the traces of elapsed time, and to meditate on the profound interstices of reality and illusion, presence and oblivion.
